In September 1986, The Advanced Surface Engineering Laboratory was found by prof. Sun Kyu Kim. The laboratory is part of the school of materials science and engineering. Many of the research conducted have been concerned with surface problems arising in the field of materialsengineering. Another very important goal of the laboratory is the investigation of plasma surface engineering such as metallic-organic chemical vapor deposition, DC/RF magnetron sputtering, cathodic arc and hybrid processes. In November 2002, this laboratory was designated as Traditional Technology Innovation Laboratory by the Korea Ministry of Science and Technology. The main goal of this laboratory is to carry out a research relevant to the industry of Ulsan area and to implement the research results to the production plants in Ulsan area. This laboratory functions as a pivotal point of interacting and disseminating technical information to industries in Ulsan area.
Current research is oriented to deposition of wear resistant, superhard nanocomposite films on tool steels to increase the durability of tools and dies used in automotive industries in Ulsan area. and mechanical

In this laboratory, we study pyrometallugy. Pyrometallugy is based on thermodynamics and iron and steel making processes. Advanced understandings of thermodynamics and iron and steel making processes are main purposes for research. We are particularly at studied on the reaction between gas/metal, gas/slag, slag/metal. After reaction, we analyzed specimen using SEM, TEM, EPMA, XRD, ICP, etc. Sometimes using this reaction, we make some alloy.

Nanomaterials mean the materials with below 100nm size, fabricated by a physical, chemical, mechanical methods. The field of powder materials has several problems with a economical efficiency, quality and so on. That still stays at a experimental stage. The nanoscale powder is hard to treat on the air due to its oxidizability.
Consequently, the most important technical object in the development of nano powder is the economical efficiency of fabricating process, compacting techniques and the reliability of sintered structure(Nanostructure materials).
The object of the NPMP Lab. is from the fabrication of Nano powder to the development of Nanostructure materials.
The NPMP Lab. fabricates Nano powder by EEW(Electric Explosion of Wire), this is the first attempt in domestic universities, and MA(Mechanical Alloy) / MC(Mechano- chemical Synthesis). The sintering is carried out in SPS(Spark plasma sintering), Multipurpose vacuum furnace and high-temperature tube furnace.
The NPMP Lab. carries out the four main projects as follows.
    1. Nanoscale Powder Production by Wire Electrical Explosion Process
    2. Nanostructure Materials by Mechanical Alloying, Mechanochemical Synthesis, Self- propagating High-temperature Synthesis
    3. Sintering of Nanomaterials
    4. Porous TiNi Shape-Memory Biomaterials (Powder Metallurgy Process, SHS)

Our laboratory was found by Professor Dong-Hwan Park of the school of Materials Science and Engineering. Our Lab. are researching various methods of welding which is the important of industrial skills. For finding better condition of welding, we effort to find that appropriate materials, conditions and methods. After we investigated the problems of conditions of welding, and then we develope the tension and fatigue limit of junction part and reduce the defect of structure to contribute industrial application. To find best conditions of welding, we adjust the welding current, voltage, speed and touch angle to find appropriate conditions. For the mechanical and chemical test, there are tension, fatigue, corrosion testing and so on.

"Thin Film Process Laboratory" was found by Professor Soon Park of the school of MaterialsScience and Engineering. We are researching the deposition and growth of thin film using various deposition method. We investigated the growth of the Diamond by DC Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (DC-PECVD) and computer simulation of CVD process. Recently, We are studying the Carbon Nanotube which is one of the Nano-technology to applicate Field Emission Display(FED). It is used the method which grows Carbon Nanotube on Si wafer and Anodized Aluminum Oxide (AAO). We will invest our effort to develop electronic-electric materials, especially Fuel Cell.

Permanent magnetic alloys are essential components in many electric, electromechanical devices used in today's technologically advanced society. Permanent magnets based on intermetallic compounds of rare-earth(RE) elements and transition metals(TM) exhibit exceptionally advantageous magnetic properties and, therefore, have found numerous applications.
MnBi has received considerable attention for its unusual magnetic and magneto-optic properties. It crystallizes in the NiAs-type hexagonal crystal structure with c axis as the easy direction of magnetization. It exists in several closely related forms, such as a low-temperature phase(LTP), which is ferromagnetic and has very high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. the high temperature phase(HTP), which is paramagnetic. and the quenched-high-temperature phase.
Permanent magnets(NdFeB, MnBi) were fabricated by the Spark Plasma Sintering(SPS) method or electric furnaceand with NdFeB, MnBi powder before and after mechanical alloying(MA)
    1. A Study on the Magnetic Properties of Mechanically Alloyed MnBi Intermetallic Compounds
    2. A study on the Spark Plasma Sintering and Magnetic properties of Mechanically milled NdFeB powder
